Running

In general, running can be divided into several categories based on distance. Short races are 100-400 meters, medium races are 800-1500 meters, and long races are 5000-10000 meters. What kind of athletics is a team event? Well, there is relay running, when the next team member passes the baton. There is also hurdling, when athletes have to jump over obstacles on a track.

High jumping from a running start

Here is another subtype of athletics. The essence of this sport is quite simple: the athlete must accelerate from a set point, run up to a pole set horizontally above the ground and make a jump. The goal of each jumper is to perform the exercise cleanly, without touching or knocking down the pole. In competitions, the height of the pole is gradually raised, not lower than 2 centimeters.

Pole vaulting

These types of athletics (pole vault and pole vault) are very similar. This option differs only in two key aspects. The run is done in a straight line and from a significantly longer distance. The athlete must lean on the pole as if it were a lever and use it to jump over the bar. The discipline is quite specific and requires coordinated work of all muscles to perform the exercise correctly.

Long jump

When it comes to long jumping, other types of athletics seem to be more complicated. However, not everything is so simple. The goal of the athlete is to accelerate, push off from the permitted zone and jump forward. In this situation, the legs act as a lever.

Throwing

This subcategory is quite difficult, but also the oldest. At competitions, athletes must throw shot put, javelin, discus, and hammer. Usually, the athletes are fenced off with side nets so that they cannot hit the spectators. The throwing field is divided into sections. As soon as the projectile touches the ground, the distance from the nearest section is measured manually to determine the winner.

All-around events

All-around athletics are the most physically demanding types of athletics, as they can include many disciplines. For example, athletes will have to run, jump, push, hurdle, overcome barriers, pole vault, etc. Depending on the format of the all-around, the interval for recovery and the start of the next stage is determined. All-around events start with four team members or more and 2-3 sports disciplines.
